Club Meetings
The Rotary Club of Nicosia-Lefkothea meets on the first and second Tuesdays of each month, 19.00-20.30, at the Semeli Hotel, Nicosia and in several occasions, in places announced each time.
Nicosia Lefkothea
LEFKOTHEA was one of the old names of Nicosia. The initial name of Nicosia was Ledra, but after the 12th century most authors referred to Lefkosia or Lefkothea, naming of the Club.
According to Greek mythology Lefkothea was a Greek Goddess who initially was mortal, was called Ino and was the wife of Athamas, King of Thebes. Ino tried to commit suicide by throwing herself into the sea. But Zeus, who had not forgotten that it was she who had brought up his son, Dionysus, transformed her into a sea goddess who, under the name Lefkothea, often appeared to the shipwrecked sailors struggling against the waves and saved them.
The following expressive picture (from an engraving by Hans Meyer after the painting of Fr. Preller) shows Lefkothea pointing to Ulysses, who is in danger of sinking, the direction of the island of Phaeacians, where the wonderings of the illustrious King of Ithaca came to an end.

Initial discussions begun in May 1987, with the enthusiastic support and assistance of the Past District Governor of Rotary Area 2450 Phoebus Zachariades. The following rotarians acted as the Extension Committee for the formation of the Club: F. Cirilli, M. Triantafyllides, A. Pattichis, J. Hadjijoseph, P. Zachariades, together with the President of the Nicosia Rotary Club Renos Clerides. Special Representative was the Past District Governor Phoebus Zachariades.
First President of the Club was Michael Triantafyllides and first Secretary Pangalos Zachariades.
The extension committee selected new members and so the Founder Members became 31 in total. Approval was asked on 19 October 1987 and was given by the Rotary International on 15 December 1987. The Charter was presented on 31 January 1988 by the then District Governor Dr Gamil Waly to the first President of the Club M. Triantafyllides, in a special Ceremony at the Hilton Hotel, Nicosia.
PDG Phoebus Zachariades was declared Honorary Member of the Club.
The Rotary Club of Nicosia-Lefkothea was founded as the third club in Nicosia, sharing the territory with two other clubs: The Rotary Club of Nicosia (founded in 1938) and the Rotary Club of Nicosia-Ledra (founded in 1982).

PP Michalakis Triantafyllides, the 1st President of Nicosia-Lefkothea in 1987 and his wife Kika, at Sounio
Rotary Club of Sahel Metn, Lebanon, District 2450
The idea of twinning started between our Director Popi Kanari and Secretary Alex Dantziguian of Lebanon. The idea began to take shape after the visit of our President Costas Georgallis to Lebanon, who attended a regular meeting of Sahel Metn.
The Official Ceremony of the twinning was conducted during the Gala Dinner of the 63rd Conference of 2450 District in St Raphael Hotel in Limassol on Thursday 29th April 1999. Both Presidents Boudi Abi Karam of RC of Sahel Metn and Costas Georgallis of RC of Nicosia – Lefkothea pledged to promote understanding and maintain friendship between the two countries, enhance fellowship and undertake joint projects beneficial to both. The protocol was signed by the two Presidents, the Directors of the International Service Popi Kanari and Elia Abi Karam, endorsed by DG Doros Jeropoulos and PPRI Paolo Costa.
